Ras Al Khaimah and Jebel Jais Guide: The UAE’s Highest Mountain, Zipline and Beaches

October 12, 2026 · City Tours · 15 min read

Mountain road under a dramatic sky

Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost of the seven emirates, is where the UAE’s landscapes meet. In a single day, you can stand on the highest peak in the country, fly down a mountainside on the world’s longest zipline, walk through a deserted pearling village, swim at a white sand beach and watch the sun set over red desert dunes. It is only about an hour from Dubai, yet it feels far calmer, greener and more relaxed than the big cities.

At the heart of Ras Al Khaimah’s appeal is Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE, rising to around 1,900 metres above sea level. A spectacular road winds its way up the mountain, with viewpoints at every bend. At the top, the air is noticeably cooler, around 10°C lower than on the coast, and in winter, temperatures can approach freezing. It is a world away from the image most people have of the UAE.

This guide covers everything you need to know about visiting Ras Al Khaimah and Jebel Jais: how to get there, the top things to do, the famous zipline, the best time to visit, where to stay, what to pack and how to combine the mountain with the emirate’s beaches, heritage and desert.

Tip: Our Ras Al Khaimah city tour and Jebel Jais includes return transport from Dubai, a guide, the drive up the mountain and stops at the best viewpoints and heritage sites.

Where is Ras Al Khaimah?

Ras Al Khaimah, often shortened to RAK, lies on the northern coast of the UAE, between the Arabian Gulf and the Hajar Mountains, bordering the Musandam peninsula of Oman. Its capital, also called Ras Al Khaimah, is divided by a creek into the old town and the newer district of Al Nakheel. The emirate has a long coastline with beaches and islands, a mountain range to the east, fertile plains with farms, and red sand dunes inland.

Jebel Jais: the UAE’s highest mountain

The road to the top

The Jebel Jais mountain road is an attraction in itself. Around 30 kilometres long, it climbs from the plains through dramatic rock formations, with hairpin bends, tunnels and viewing platforms along the way. Every turn reveals a new view of the jagged peaks and deep valleys. Cyclists train on the road, and in winter, many families drive up to enjoy the cool weather.

Jebel Jais viewing deck

Near the top of the mountain, the Jebel Jais viewing deck park offers panoramic views over the Hajar Mountains, with seating areas, a café and picnic spots. On a clear day, you can see layer after layer of mountains stretching towards Oman. Sunrise and sunset are particularly beautiful, as the light paints the rocks in shades of orange and pink.

Jais Flight: the world’s longest zipline

The star attraction of Jebel Jais is Jais Flight, recognised as the world’s longest zipline at around 2.8 kilometres. Riders are attached face-down in a harness, like a flying superhero, and launched from a platform high on the mountain. You fly over the valleys at speeds that can reach well over 100 kilometres per hour, landing on a platform below. The whole flight lasts around three minutes, and the views are unforgettable.

Book: Jebel Jais flight zipline, from AED 399.

Good to know: zipline riders must meet minimum and maximum weight and height requirements, and minimum age rules apply. Riders are weighed on arrival. Check the requirements before you book, and wear closed shoes and secure clothing.

Jais Sky Tour and other adventures

Alongside Jais Flight, the adventure park at Jebel Jais offers the Jais Sky Tour, a series of shorter ziplines that take you across the mountain from platform to platform, as well as a sledding experience on a toboggan track that winds down the mountainside, and a via ferrata climbing route for experienced adventurers. Each experience has its own requirements and should be booked in advance, especially on weekends and holidays.

Hiking on Jebel Jais

Marked hiking trails start near the top of the mountain, ranging from short walks to viewpoints to longer routes along the ridges. The cooler air makes hiking much more comfortable than in the lowlands, especially from October to April. Always carry water, wear proper shoes and check the weather before you go.

Dining with a view

Several restaurants and cafés sit near the summit area, including one of the highest restaurants in the UAE, with terraces overlooking the mountains. Booking a table for sunset is one of the most memorable things to do on Jebel Jais.

Other things to do in Ras Al Khaimah

1. Dhayah Fort

Dhayah Fort is the only remaining hilltop fort in the UAE. Climb the steep steps to the top of the hill for views over palm groves, the mountains and the sea. The fort played an important role in the region’s history, and the walk is short but steep.

2. Jazirat Al Hamra: the abandoned pearling village

Jazirat Al Hamra is one of the best-preserved traditional coastal towns in the UAE. Its coral-stone houses, mosque, fort and market were abandoned in the late twentieth century as residents moved to modern homes. Walking through its quiet lanes is a fascinating glimpse into the pearling era. The area is being carefully restored, and heritage events are sometimes held here.

3. National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah

Housed in an old fort that was once the residence of the ruling family, the museum displays archaeological finds, traditional weapons, jewellery, pearling equipment and exhibits on the emirate’s natural history.

4. Beaches and resorts

Ras Al Khaimah has some of the best beaches in the UAE, with soft white sand and calm, clear water. Al Marjan Island, a group of man-made islands, is home to large beach resorts, while Al Hamra and the coastline north of the city have quieter beaches. A beach stay is much more affordable here than in Dubai.

Book: our Ras Al Khaimah beach escape, 3 nights, with hotel and transfers included.

5. Desert safari in Ras Al Khaimah

The dunes of Ras Al Khaimah are a deep red colour and are often less crowded than the deserts near Dubai. An evening safari includes dune bashing, camel rides, sandboarding and a barbecue dinner at a desert camp.

Book: Ras Al Khaimah desert safari with dinner. For a full comparison with Dubai’s desert, read our complete Dubai desert safari guide.

6. Mangrove kayaking

The creeks and lagoons of Ras Al Khaimah have mangrove forests where you can kayak and spot birds, including herons and flamingos in the cooler months.

7. Suwaidi Pearls farm

Visit a working pearl farm to learn about the history of pearling in the Gulf, see how cultured pearls are grown and open an oyster yourself to discover if it contains a pearl.

8. Al Marjan Island promenade

Walk or cycle along the promenade of Al Marjan Island, enjoy the sea views and stop for a meal at one of the waterfront restaurants.

A brief history of Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah has one of the longest histories in the UAE. Archaeological sites across the emirate show human settlement going back around 7,000 years. In the medieval period, the trading port of Julfar, near today’s city, was one of the most important harbours in the Gulf, trading pearls, dates and goods with India, Persia, East Africa and China. Ceramics from as far away as China have been found at the site.

The emirate’s name means “top of the tent”, and the area was known for its seafaring traditions, pearl diving and boat building. In the nineteenth century, it was a major regional power. Ras Al Khaimah joined the United Arab Emirates in February 1972, a few months after the federation was founded. Today, it combines its heritage with modern tourism, manufacturing and a growing reputation as an adventure destination.

Visiting the National Museum, Dhayah Fort and Jazirat Al Hamra gives you a real sense of this long story, and makes a striking contrast with the modern resorts on the coast.

Driving the Jebel Jais road: practical tips

If you drive up Jebel Jais yourself rather than joining a tour, keep these points in mind:

  1. Fill up with fuel before you start the climb; there are few petrol stations on the mountain.
  2. Use a lower gear when coming down to avoid overheating your brakes.
  3. Watch for cyclists, goats and slow vehicles around the bends.
  4. Park only in designated viewpoints, never on the roadside or on bends.
  5. Expect cooler temperatures, and check the weather forecast before setting off.
  6. Allow extra time on weekends, when the road and car parks are busy.

On a guided tour, our drivers know the road well and stop at the best viewpoints, so you can focus on the scenery.

Jebel Jais with children

Families love Jebel Jais. Children enjoy the twisting road, the cool air at the top and spotting mountain goats on the rocks. The viewing deck has a play area, picnic spots and space to run around. Older children who meet the requirements can try the Jais Sky Tour ziplines or the toboggan ride, while younger ones can enjoy shorter nature walks.

Bring jackets for everyone in winter, as children feel the cold quickly at altitude, and pack snacks and water for the drive. If anyone in your family suffers from motion sickness, give them a window seat and stop at viewpoints along the way.

Food and local flavours

Ras Al Khaimah is a great place to try Emirati home-style cooking. Look out for harees, a slow-cooked dish of wheat and meat; machboos, spiced rice with chicken, lamb or fish; and fresh grilled fish from the morning catch, often served with rice and salad at simple seafront restaurants. In the mountains, cafés serve karak tea and Arabic coffee with dates, the perfect warm drink on a cool day. Ras Al Khaimah is also known for its fresh farm produce, as the plains below the mountains are among the most fertile in the country.

A two-day Ras Al Khaimah plan

Day 1: Mountains. Drive up Jebel Jais in the morning, stopping at viewpoints along the road. Ride Jais Flight or the Sky Tour, have lunch with a view, then take a short hike near the summit. Return to your beach hotel for a sunset swim.

Day 2: Heritage, beach and desert. Visit the National Museum and Dhayah Fort in the morning, then explore Jazirat Al Hamra. Relax at the beach in the early afternoon, and finish with an evening desert safari and barbecue dinner in the red dunes. Return to Dubai the next morning, or continue your stay.

This plan works well as part of a longer UAE holiday. Our Dubai 4 nights holiday package can be extended with a stay in Ras Al Khaimah; ask our team for a tailored quote.

Best time to visit Ras Al Khaimah and Jebel Jais

SeasonOn the coastAt the top of Jebel JaisBest for

April and October28°C to 35°C15°C to 25°CZipline, beaches and sightseeing
May to September35°C to 45°C22°C to 30°CEscaping the heat on the mountain

Winter is the most popular time, and occasional cold snaps can even bring frost on Jebel Jais. In summer, the mountain is a welcome escape from the heat of the coast, and many UAE residents drive up in the evening to enjoy the cooler air.

Important: the Jebel Jais road can close temporarily during heavy rain because of the risk of rockfalls and flash floods. Check the forecast before you travel in the rainy months.

Events and seasonal highlights

Ras Al Khaimah hosts a number of events through the year that are worth planning around. In winter, the emirate is known for spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks over Al Marjan Island, which have set world records in previous years and draw visitors from across the UAE. Cycling events, trail races and hiking challenges take place on Jebel Jais in the cooler months, and heritage festivals at Jazirat Al Hamra celebrate traditional crafts, music and food.

Winter is also the season for birdwatching in the coastal lagoons and mangroves, when migratory birds, including flamingos, spend the colder months in the region. If you enjoy nature, bring binoculars and visit early in the morning.

Practical information

  • Currency: UAE dirham (AED). Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small cafés and parking.
  • Mobile coverage: good across most of the emirate, though weaker in deep mountain valleys. A UAE tourist SIM card keeps you connected.
  • Dress code: modest clothing in towns and heritage sites; swimwear only at beaches and pools.
  • Visas: the same UAE visa covers all seven emirates. Read our UAE tourist visa guide for details.
  • Health and safety: carry water at altitude, use sunscreen and follow the instructions of activity staff.

What to pack

  • Warm layers for the mountain in winter, as it can be cold and windy at the top
  • Closed shoes for the zipline and hiking
  • Sun protection, as UV is stronger at altitude
  • Swimwear for the beach
  • Passport or ID
  • Motion sickness tablets if you are sensitive to winding roads

Where to stay

Most visitors stay at a beach resort on Al Marjan Island or at Al Hamra, where large hotels offer pools, private beaches and family facilities. For a different experience, there are mountain lodges and campsites near Jebel Jais, and desert resorts inland. Prices are generally lower than in Dubai, making Ras Al Khaimah a great choice for a relaxing extension to a Dubai holiday.
