Visa requirements for Georgia
Georgia has one of the most open visa policies in the world. Citizens of many countries, including the GCC countries, the EU, the UK and the US, can enter visa-free for up to a year. Many travellers who need a visa can apply for a Georgian e-visa online. In addition, Georgia has allowed holders of valid residence permits from certain countries, including GCC states, to enter visa-free for short stays, which makes it particularly attractive for UAE residents of other nationalities.
Important: visa rules can change, and requirements depend on your nationality and residence status. Always check the latest official rules before booking, and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months and your UAE residence visa is valid for your return. Our team can check the current requirements for you when you book a package. For help with other visas, see our visa services.
Best time to visit Georgia
Georgia has four distinct seasons, and each offers something different.
| Season | Months | Weather in Tbilisi | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | April to May | 15°C to 25°C | Green landscapes, blossoms, sightseeing |
| Summer | June to August | 25°C to 35°C | Mountains, hiking, Black Sea beaches |

Summer for UAE residents
Summer is the most popular time for travellers from the Gulf, as it offers an escape from the heat. Tbilisi can be hot in July and August, but the mountain regions such as Kazbegi, Gudauri and Borjomi are much cooler and greener.
Winter for snow
From December to March, Georgia is a winter wonderland. Gudauri, a ski resort about two and a half hours from Tbilisi, has excellent slopes for beginners and experienced skiers, and many families from the UAE visit to see snow for the first time.
Autumn for wine
September and October are perfect for visiting the wine region of Kakheti during the rtveli, the grape harvest, when families gather to pick grapes and make wine.
Top destinations in Georgia
Tbilisi
Georgia’s capital is a charming, lively city built along the Mtkvari River. Its Old Town is a maze of narrow streets with wooden balconies, churches, a mosque and a synagogue standing close together, and the famous sulphur bathhouses with their brick domes. Highlights include:
- Narikala Fortress: an ancient fortress above the Old Town, reached by cable car, with panoramic views over the city.
- The Bridge of Peace: a modern glass and steel pedestrian bridge that lights up at night.
- Abanotubani: the sulphur bath district, where you can relax in natural hot spring water.
- Rustaveli Avenue: the city’s grand boulevard, with theatres, museums and cafés.
- Holy Trinity Cathedral: one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world.
- Mtatsminda Park: an amusement park on the mountain above the city, reached by funicular.
- The Dry Bridge Market: a flea market selling antiques, art and Soviet-era souvenirs.
Mtskheta
About 20 minutes from Tbilisi, Mtskheta is one of the oldest towns in Georgia and its former capital. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and, on a hill above the town, Jvari Monastery, overlooking the meeting point of two rivers. It is usually visited on the way to Kazbegi.
Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity Church
The drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi along the Georgian Military Highway is one of the most beautiful road trips in the world. You pass Ananuri Fortress on the shore of the Zhinvali reservoir, climb through the ski resort of Gudauri, stop at the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument with its colourful mosaic overlooking a deep valley, and arrive at the town of Stepantsminda, also called Kazbegi. Above the town, the fourteenth-century Gergeti Trinity Church stands alone on a hill against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek, a glacier-covered peak over 5,000 metres high. It is one of the most iconic images of Georgia.
Gudauri
Georgia’s main ski resort, with long, open slopes, modern lifts and good snow from December to April. In summer, Gudauri offers paragliding over the valleys, hiking and horse riding.
Kakheti: the wine region
Kakheti, in the east of the country, is the heart of Georgian wine. Visit family wineries to taste wines made in the traditional way, fermented in large clay vessels called qvevri buried in the ground, a technique recognised by UNESCO. The hilltop town of Sighnaghi, known as the City of Love, has cobbled streets, city walls and views across the Alazani Valley to the Caucasus mountains. Nearby, Bodbe Monastery is an important pilgrimage site.
Batumi
On the Black Sea coast, Batumi is Georgia’s seaside resort city, with a long boulevard, modern architecture, beaches, a botanical garden and a lively nightlife. It is popular in summer for beach holidays.
Borjomi
Famous for its mineral water, Borjomi is a green spa town surrounded by forests. Walk in the central park, taste the mineral springs and bathe in the warm sulphur pools.
Other highlights
- Kutaisi: Georgia’s third city, with Bagrati Cathedral, Gelati Monastery and nearby caves and canyons such as Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon.
- Uplistsikhe: an ancient rock-cut cave town near Gori.
- Vardzia: a spectacular cave monastery carved into a cliff.
- Svaneti: a remote mountain region with medieval stone towers, for adventurous travellers.

A little history and culture
Georgia is one of the oldest Christian nations in the world, having adopted Christianity in the fourth century. Its language has its own unique alphabet, with flowing, rounded letters that you will see on signs everywhere. Over the centuries, Georgia was crossed by traders on the Silk Road and fought over by great empires, including the Persians, Byzantines, Arabs, Mongols, Ottomans and Russians. Its fortresses, watchtowers and monasteries tell this story. In the twentieth century, Georgia was part of the Soviet Union, and it became independent again in 1991.
Hospitality is at the heart of Georgian culture. Guests are considered a gift, and you may be invited to share food, wine or fruit even by people you have just met. A traditional Georgian feast, called a supra, is led by a toastmaster, the tamada, who gives long, poetic toasts to family, friends, the homeland and those who have passed away. If you have the chance to join one, you will experience Georgia at its warmest.
Getting around in Georgia
Within Tbilisi, taxis and ride-hailing apps are cheap and convenient, and the metro is a quick way to cross the city. Walking is the best way to explore the Old Town, though the streets are hilly and cobbled. Between cities, you can travel by shared minibus, called a marshrutka, by train on some routes, or by private car with a driver. For visitors, especially families and first-time travellers, a private driver or guided tour is the most comfortable option, as mountain roads can be narrow and winding and road signs outside the cities are not always in English.
In winter, the road to Kazbegi can close temporarily because of snow or avalanche risk, so build some flexibility into your plans. Our packages include transport with experienced local drivers who know the roads in every season.
Georgia for families
Georgia is an excellent destination for families from the UAE. Children love the cable cars in Tbilisi, the funicular and amusement park on Mtatsminda, the snow in winter and horse riding in the mountains in summer. Distances between the main sights are manageable, and many hotels offer family rooms. Pack warm layers, as mountain temperatures can be much cooler than in the city, and allow rest time between long drives. Motion sickness can be an issue on the winding mountain roads, so plan breaks at viewpoints.
Georgia for couples and honeymooners
With its romantic old towns, mountain views and wine country, Georgia is a popular honeymoon destination. Sighnaghi, the City of Love, has a wedding registry office open around the clock. A stay in a boutique hotel in Tbilisi’s Old Town, a night in a mountain lodge facing Mount Kazbek and a day of wine tasting in Kakheti make a perfect romantic itinerary. Tell us you are on your honeymoon when booking, and we will suggest special touches.
Skiing and snow in Gudauri
Gudauri is the most popular ski resort in Georgia, and an easy choice for skiers from the Gulf. The resort sits at about 2,200 metres, with slopes reaching above 3,000 metres. The pistes are wide and open, suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers, and there is excellent off-piste terrain for experts. Equipment rental, ski schools with English-speaking instructors and comfortable hotels are all available. Lift passes and lessons cost much less than in the Alps.
The season usually runs from December to April. For the best snow conditions, visit in January and February. If you are not a skier, you can still enjoy the snow with sledging, snowmobile rides, tubing and simply admiring the views.
Shopping and souvenirs
Look for these souvenirs to bring home from Georgia:
- Churchkhela and local sweets
- Spices, especially svanuri marili (Svanetian salt) and khmeli suneli
- Handmade enamel jewellery called minankari
- Felt products, such as slippers and hats
- Ceramics and traditional drinking horns
- Honey and local jams
Tbilisi’s Dry Bridge Market, the Old Town shops and the modern malls offer plenty of choice. Remember to check customs allowances when bringing food products back to the UAE.
What to pack
- Layers, including a warm jacket, even in summer if you visit the mountains
- Comfortable walking shoes for cobbled streets and hiking
- A scarf for visiting churches
- Rain jacket in spring and autumn
- Winter clothing, gloves and boots for snow trips
- Adapter: Georgia uses European two-pin plugs (type C and F)
How much does a Georgia trip cost?
| Expense | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel per night | AED 100 to AED 200 | AED 250 to AED 500 |
| Meal in a restaurant | AED 30 to AED 50 | AED 60 to AED 120 |
| Taxi within Tbilisi | AED 10 to AED 25 | AED 10 to AED 25 |

Georgian food you must try
Georgian cuisine is one of the highlights of any trip. Try these dishes:
- Khachapuri: cheese-filled bread. The Adjarian version, shaped like a boat with an egg and butter in the middle, is famous.
- Khinkali: large dumplings filled with spiced meat and broth. Hold them by the top and sip the broth first.
- Mtsvadi: grilled meat skewers.
- Badrijani nigvzit: aubergine rolls filled with walnut paste.
- Lobio: a hearty bean stew served in a clay pot.
- Churchkhela: a sweet made from nuts dipped in thickened grape juice, often called Georgian Snickers.
Good to know: halal food is available in Tbilisi and Batumi, with several restaurants serving halal meat. Many Georgian dishes are vegetarian, using beans, walnuts, aubergines and cheese.
