Once you decide to do a desert safari in Dubai, the next question is which one. The three most popular formats are the evening safari, the morning safari and the overnight safari. They all take you into the same red dunes, but they feel very different. One is a full evening out with dinner and entertainment, one is a short, cool adventure before lunch, and one is a slow, peaceful night under the stars.
Choosing the wrong one is not a disaster, but choosing the right one can turn a good trip into the highlight of your holiday. In this guide we compare all three in detail: timings, what is included, prices, the pros and cons of each, and which suits families, couples, photographers, adventure seekers and summer visitors. We finish with a quick decision table so you can pick in seconds.

The evening desert safari
What happens
The evening safari is the classic Dubai experience and the one most visitors book. Your 4×4 collects you from your hotel in the mid-afternoon and drives out to the dunes, usually about an hour from the city. The driver lets some air out of the tyres for better grip, and the dune bashing begins: about 30 minutes of climbing, sliding and dipping through the sand.
As the sun lowers, the convoy stops on a high dune for photos. This is the moment most people remember, as the sand turns from gold to deep orange and the shadows stretch across the desert. Then you drive to camp, where you can ride a camel, try sandboarding, get a henna design and relax on cushions with Arabic coffee and dates.
After dark, dinner is served, usually a barbecue buffet with grilled meats, salads, rice and Arabic sweets, with vegetarian dishes available. While you eat, performers take the stage for a tanoura show, a fire show and a belly dance performance. You are back at your hotel at around 9:00 PM.
Book it here: Evening Desert Safari with BBQ Dinner.
Pros
- Includes everything: dunes, sunset, camp activities, dinner and shows.
- Best value per hour of experience.
- Ideal for first-time visitors who want the “full” safari.
- Suits all ages, with private vehicles available for families.
Cons
- Takes up your whole afternoon and evening.
- Large shared camps can be busy in peak season.
- Dune bashing after lunch is not ideal for anyone prone to motion sickness.
Upgrades worth considering
If you want a calmer evening with better food and seating, the Premium Desert Safari at a Private Camp uses a smaller camp, fewer guests per vehicle and a served dinner. If you want more adrenaline, the Desert Safari with Quad Biking adds 30 minutes on your own quad before sunset.
The morning desert safari
What happens
The morning safari is a shorter, adventure-focused trip. You are collected at around 8:00 AM while the air is still cool. After about an hour’s drive, you head into the dunes for dune bashing, then stop for sandboarding down a steep slope. Many morning tours also include a visit to a camel farm and a short camel ride. You are back in Dubai before lunch.
There is no dinner or entertainment on a morning safari. The focus is on the dunes themselves, the fresh morning light and the quiet of the desert before the day heats up.
Book it here: Morning Desert Safari with Sandboarding.
Pros
- Cooler temperatures, especially important from May to September.
- Soft morning light and smooth, wind-swept dunes, perfect for photos.
- Quieter, with fewer vehicles in the desert.
- Leaves your afternoon and evening free for other plans.
- The lowest price of the three.
Cons
- No sunset, dinner or shows.
- An early start, which may not suit everyone on holiday.
Who it suits
Morning safaris are ideal for summer visitors, photographers, people who are short on evenings, and travellers who mostly want the dune experience. They are also a smart choice if you get motion sickness, since dune bashing on an empty or light stomach is easier.
The overnight desert safari
What happens
The overnight safari begins just like the evening trip: afternoon pickup, dune bashing, sunset, camp activities, dinner and shows. But when the other guests leave at around 9:00 PM, you stay. The camp becomes quiet, the lights dim, and the sky fills with stars in a way you will never see in the city.
You sleep in a tent at camp with bedding provided. Early the next morning, you wake to watch the sunrise over the dunes, have breakfast at the camp, and are driven back to your hotel at around 9:00 AM.
Book it here: Overnight Desert Safari Camp. A private tent is available as an add-on.
Pros
- See both sunset and sunrise in the desert.
- The night sky and silence are unforgettable.
- More relaxed: no rush to leave after dinner.
- Romantic and memorable for couples and special occasions.
Cons
- The highest price of the three.
- Camp facilities are simpler than a hotel.
- Less comfortable in the hottest summer months, when nights stay warm.
Who it suits
Couples, honeymooners, photographers who want sunrise and stars, and anyone who wants a slower, deeper desert experience. It is at its best between November and March.

Which safari suits you?
First-time visitors
Choose the evening safari. It gives you the most complete picture of desert life in one trip, and the sunset stop alone is worth it.
Families with young children
The evening safari with a private 4×4 is usually best. Children love the camel rides, sandboarding and shows, and a private vehicle lets you ask for gentler dune driving. For toddlers who need an early night, a morning safari can work well too. Read more in our guide to things to do in Dubai with family.
Couples and honeymooners
The overnight safari is the most romantic choice. If you prefer to sleep in your hotel, a premium evening safari or a sunrise hot air balloon ride are wonderful alternatives.
Summer visitors
Choose the morning safari. If you prefer an evening trip in summer, go for it, but dress light and drink plenty of water. Our best time for a desert safari guide explains what to expect each month.
Adventure seekers
Book a morning or late-afternoon Dune Buggy Desert Adventure, or add quad biking to an evening safari.
Photographers
Morning for clean dunes and soft light, overnight for sunrise and stars, evening for the classic sunset shot.
Guests who get motion sickness
Choose a morning safari on a light stomach, sit in the front, and ask the driver to take it gently. Or book an evening safari with a private vehicle and tell the driver at the start.
Older guests, pregnant guests and anyone with back problems
Dune bashing is not recommended for pregnant guests or people with back, neck or heart problems. We can arrange a direct transfer to the evening camp so they still enjoy the sunset, dinner and shows without the bumpy drive. Tell us when you book.
What the camps are like
The camp is where you spend most of your time on the evening and overnight safaris, so it is worth knowing what to expect.
Standard evening camps
Most evening safaris use a large, permanent camp built to look like a traditional Bedouin settlement. You will find a central sand arena or stage, low tables with floor cushions and carpets around it, a buffet area, and stalls for henna, traditional dress photos and souvenirs. There are proper toilets, washbasins and usually a small shop selling drinks and snacks. Camel rides start just outside the camp, and sandboarding takes place on a nearby dune.
In peak season, a large camp can host many guests at once, which creates a lively, festive atmosphere. If you prefer something quieter, choose a weekday or a premium safari.
Premium and private camps
Premium camps are smaller and more spacious. Instead of floor cushions, many have proper tables and chairs or raised majlis seating, and dinner is served to your table. Fewer guests means shorter waits for camel rides and better views of the shows. These camps often have nicer washrooms too. The Premium Desert Safari at a Private Camp uses this style of camp.
Overnight camps
On the overnight safari, guests sleep in tents set up at the camp. Tents have mattresses, pillows and blankets, and shared washrooms are nearby. It is comfortable but simple, more like glamorous camping than a hotel. For extra privacy, you can upgrade to a private tent. After the evening guests leave, the camp becomes calm and dark, which is when the stars really appear.
The experience hour by hour
To help you picture each safari, here is a more detailed look at how the time is spent.
Evening safari
The first hour is the drive out of the city, past the last neighbourhoods and onto the desert road. Your driver usually stops at a meeting point where the convoy gathers and tyres are deflated. The next half hour or so is dune bashing, the most exciting part of the trip, with the 4×4 climbing steep dunes and sliding down the far side. Then comes the sunset stop, about 20 to 30 minutes on a high dune for photos. You arrive at camp as the light fades, with roughly an hour for activities before dinner. Dinner and the shows take about an hour and a half, and then it is the drive back to the city.
Morning safari
After pickup and the drive out, the dune bashing session is similar to the evening one but in cooler air and softer light. Sandboarding follows, with time for several runs down the dune. Many morning tours then stop at a camel farm, where you can see camels up close and take a short ride. The trip ends with the drive back to Dubai, arriving before lunch.
Overnight safari
The overnight trip follows the evening schedule until about 9:00 PM. After that the camp quietens down. Many guests sit by the fire, look at the stars and enjoy the silence. Wake-up is early, around 6:00 AM, for the sunrise, followed by breakfast and the drive back to Dubai.
Accessibility and comfort
All three safaris involve some walking on soft sand, which can be tiring for guests with limited mobility. Camps are on flat ground and staff are happy to help. If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or has difficulty walking, tell us when you book and we will recommend the most suitable camp and arrange a direct, smooth drive rather than dune bashing.
For guests who feel the heat, the morning safari is the easiest. For guests who feel the cold, the evening safari in summer or a warm jacket in winter is the answer. The overnight safari is the most demanding in terms of comfort, simply because you are away from your hotel for the night.
Real examples: which safari our guests chose
These are typical situations we help guests with every week:
- A family of five visiting in December with children aged 4, 8 and 12 chose the evening safari with a private 4×4. The driver kept the dune bashing gentle, the children loved the camel ride and sandboarding, and everyone was back at the hotel before the youngest got too tired.
- A couple on honeymoon in February booked the overnight safari with a private tent. They said the sunrise and the silence of the desert at night were the most memorable part of their trip.
- Two friends visiting in July chose the morning safari to avoid the heat, then spent the afternoon at Ski Dubai and the evening on a Dubai Marina dhow cruise.
- A group of four colleagues added quad biking to the evening safari for an extra dose of adrenaline before dinner.
- Grandparents travelling with their family skipped dune bashing and took a direct transfer to the camp, joining the rest of the group for sunset, dinner and the shows.
Can you combine them?
Yes, and many guests do. A popular plan for a longer stay is a morning safari early in the trip to experience the dunes, followed by an overnight or premium evening safari later in the week. You can also pair a morning safari with a Dubai Creek dhow cruise on the same day for a “desert by day, creek by night” experience.
If you are planning several activities, our Dubai 4 Nights Holiday Package includes an evening safari along with a city tour, dhow dinner and the Burj Khalifa, and can be adjusted to suit your dates.

Food compared: what you eat on each safari
Food is one of the clearest differences between the three formats, so it is worth comparing them directly.
On the evening safari, dinner is a barbecue buffet served after sunset. Expect grilled chicken, lamb or beef, kofta, rice, Arabic bread, hummus, moutabal, tabbouleh and fresh salads, with at least one vegetarian main dish and Arabic sweets for dessert. Water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee with dates are included. On a premium evening safari, the menu is wider and the food is served to your table rather than from a buffet line.
On the morning safari, there is no meal. Water is provided, and some camel farm stops offer Arabic coffee and dates. Most guests have breakfast before pickup and lunch back in the city.
On the overnight safari, you get the same dinner as the evening safari, plus breakfast at camp the next morning. Breakfast is usually simple: eggs, bread, cheese, fruit, tea and coffee.
If you have dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or allergies, tell us when you book. Camps can usually prepare a suitable plate if they know in advance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking the cheapest safari without checking inclusions. Some very cheap offers add charges at camp. Our tour pages list exactly what is included.
- Eating a big lunch before an evening safari. Dune bashing on a full stomach is uncomfortable.
- Skipping the jacket in winter. Desert nights in December and January are colder than people expect.
- Booking an overnight camp in peak summer without realising nights stay warm.
- Leaving the safari to the last day of your trip. If the weather causes a cancellation, you will have no time to reschedule.
A final word from our team
There is no wrong choice here. Every safari takes you into the same beautiful desert, and every one of them is a highlight for the guests who book it. The best safari is simply the one that fits your dates, your energy levels and the people you are travelling with. If you are still torn, message us your plans and we will give you an honest recommendation, even if that means suggesting the cheaper option.
