There are many ways to see the Dubai desert, but none is quite as peaceful as drifting over it in a hot air balloon at sunrise. One moment you are standing on the sand in the dark, watching the crew fill a huge balloon with hot air. The next, you are rising silently above the dunes as the sun lifts over the horizon, turning the desert gold, pink and orange beneath you. Many guests tell us it was the single best moment of their trip.
A hot air balloon ride in Dubai is also one of the more expensive experiences in the UAE, and it involves a very early start, so it makes sense to understand exactly what you are paying for before you book. This guide walks you through the whole morning, from pickup to landing and breakfast. We also cover safety, who can fly, the best season, what to wear, how to choose an operator and how to make the most of your flight.
Tip: Book your balloon flight early in your trip. Flights depend on the wind and are sometimes rescheduled, so leaving it to your last morning gives you no backup day.
What is a hot air balloon ride in Dubai?
Balloon flights in Dubai take off from the desert south-east of the city, in the area around the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and Margham. The balloons are large, carrying anywhere from a few guests to over 20 passengers in a basket divided into compartments. A licensed pilot controls the height of the balloon by heating the air inside the envelope with a gas burner. Direction is decided by the wind at different heights, which is why every flight path is slightly different.
The flight itself lasts around one hour, but the whole experience takes about four to five hours including pickup, briefing, inflation, the flight, landing and breakfast. Most packages include hotel transfers from Dubai, refreshments before the flight, the flight, a celebration after landing, a breakfast at a desert camp and a flight certificate. Some add a falcon show, camel rides or a drive in a vintage Land Rover.
Our Hot Air Balloon Ride over the Desert includes hotel pickup, about one hour in the air at sunrise, a falcon show and photos after landing, a breakfast at camp and a certificate.
The morning, step by step
4:00 – 4:30 AM: Hotel pickup
Pickup is very early, usually between 4:00 and 4:30 AM depending on the season and your hotel’s location. The exact time is confirmed the evening before. Your driver collects you in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the drive to the launch site takes about an hour. Many guests sleep on the way.
5:30 AM: Arrival, check-in and briefing
At the launch site, you check in and have tea, coffee and light snacks while the crew prepares the balloons. The pilot gives a safety briefing explaining how to stand in the basket during take-off and landing, what to hold, and what to do with your bags and cameras. Listen carefully; the landing position is the most important thing to remember.
5:45 AM: Inflation
This is one of the most exciting parts of the morning, and many guests say they did not expect to enjoy it so much. Large fans first fill the balloon with cold air while it lies on the sand. Then the pilot fires the burners, and the envelope slowly rises upright. The roar of the burners and the glow of the flames against the dark sky make for great photos and videos.
6:00 AM: Take-off and flight
Once the balloon is upright, you climb into your compartment of the basket. Take-off is surprisingly gentle: there is no jolt, the ground simply drops away. Within minutes you are hundreds of metres above the desert. Depending on the wind and conditions, balloons can climb to around 1,000 metres or more, giving views over the dunes, desert camps, farms and, on clear days, the distant outline of Dubai’s skyline and the Hajar Mountains.
The most magical moment is sunrise. As the sun appears, the desert below changes colour almost minute by minute. Because the balloon moves with the wind, there is very little breeze in the basket, and apart from the occasional burst of the burner, it is quiet. You may spot camels, gazelles or oryx below.
7:00 AM: Landing
The pilot chooses a safe landing spot in open desert. You take the landing position from the briefing, usually facing backwards with knees slightly bent and holding the rope handles. Landings are often gentle but can involve a bump and a short skid across the sand, which is completely normal. The ground crew follows the balloon in 4x4s and is waiting when you land.
7:30 AM: Celebration, falcon show and breakfast
After landing, there is usually a short celebration and photos with the balloon. Many packages include a falcon show, where you can see these impressive birds up close and sometimes hold one on a gloved arm. You are then driven to a desert camp for breakfast and to receive your flight certificate.
9:30 – 10:00 AM: Return to your hotel
You are driven back to Dubai and usually reach your hotel by mid-morning, with the rest of the day free. Many guests have a nap and plan a relaxed afternoon.

| Flight with vintage Land Rover ride | Standard flight plus a classic 4×4 drive to breakfast | Photographers, car lovers |

Ask us about private flights, proposals and special celebrations. We can arrange decorations, cakes and photography with advance notice.
Good to know: If your flight is cancelled by the operator because of weather, you can choose a new date or a full refund. Our booking terms explain this in detail.
Is it safe?
Hot air ballooning in the UAE is regulated, and pilots must be licensed and experienced. Balloons are inspected regularly, and flights only go ahead when weather conditions are suitable. The pilot and operator make that decision on the morning itself, based on wind speed, visibility and forecasts.
The most important safety rules for passengers are simple:
- Listen to the briefing and follow the pilot’s instructions at all times.
- Stay inside the basket and do not lean out or sit on the edge.
- Keep loose items such as hats and scarves secure.
- Take the landing position when told to.
- Do not smoke anywhere near the balloon.
Who should not fly?
Balloon flights are not suitable for everyone. Operators typically do not allow pregnant guests, very young children and people with certain medical conditions such as recent surgery, serious back or heart problems or mobility issues that make climbing into the basket or taking the landing position difficult. Minimum age rules vary by operator, so tell us the ages of children when you enquire, and we will confirm.
Guests with a fear of heights are often surprised to find that ballooning does not trigger the same feeling as standing at the edge of a building. Because the basket moves with you and there is no fixed reference point, many people feel calm. If you are nervous, stand in the middle of the compartment and focus on the horizon.
When is the best time for a balloon flight?
Balloon flights take place at sunrise every day of the season, because early morning air is calm and cool, giving the most stable conditions.
Best season
The main ballooning season runs through the cooler months, roughly from September to May. From October to April, the weather is ideal, and the views are often clear. December to February can bring occasional fog early in the morning, which may delay or cancel flights. In the peak of summer, flight schedules can be reduced, so check with us if you are visiting between June and August.
Best day
There is no single best day, but we always suggest booking early in your stay. If the weather forces a cancellation, you then have time to fly on another morning. Weekends and holidays sell out first.
What to wear and bring
The desert can be cool before sunrise, especially from November to March, and warms up quickly once the sun is up. Dress in layers.
- Layers: a light jacket or sweater over a t-shirt. You can remove the jacket after landing.
- Closed, comfortable shoes: you will climb in and out of the basket and walk on sand.
- Hat or cap: the burners give off heat above your head. A cap protects your hair and scalp.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen: for after sunrise.
- Camera or phone with a strap: a strap prevents drops over the side.
- Small bag only: space in the basket is limited.
Leave large bags, tripods and selfie sticks behind. Drones are not allowed.
How does a hot air balloon fly?
Understanding the basics makes the flight even more enjoyable. A hot air balloon flies because hot air is lighter than cold air. The envelope, the large fabric part of the balloon, is filled with air that the pilot heats using powerful gas burners above the basket. When the air inside is hotter than the air outside, the balloon becomes lighter than the air around it and rises. To descend, the pilot lets the air cool or opens a vent at the top of the envelope to release some hot air.
What the pilot cannot do is steer. A balloon travels in the same direction as the wind. Skilled pilots use the fact that wind often blows in slightly different directions at different heights. By climbing or descending, they can pick up a breeze going the way they want and guide the balloon towards a safe, open landing area. This is why no two flights follow exactly the same route, and why the ground crew in their 4x4s follow the balloon across the desert rather than waiting at a fixed spot.
Because the balloon moves at the same speed as the wind, you feel almost no breeze in the basket, even when you are moving quite quickly over the ground. It is this stillness, combined with the silence between burns, that makes ballooning feel so calm.
Why flights are sometimes cancelled
The decision to fly is made early each morning, sometimes only minutes before take-off. The main reasons a flight may be postponed are:
- Wind: balloons need light winds for a safe take-off and landing. If the wind is too strong at ground level or higher up, the flight will not go ahead.
- Visibility: fog, which occasionally forms on winter mornings, or dust in the air can reduce visibility below safe limits.
- Rain and storms: rare in the UAE, but they ground all flights.
A cancelled flight can be disappointing, especially after an early alarm, but it is a sign that the operator takes safety seriously. When it happens, you can rebook for another morning or take a full refund. This is why we recommend booking your flight early in your stay.
How to choose a balloon operator
Several companies fly balloons in Dubai. Before you book with anyone, it is worth checking a few things:
- Licensing: the operator and pilots should be licensed by the UAE aviation authorities.
- Basket size: some operators fly very large baskets with many passengers; others use smaller baskets for a more personal feel.
- What is included: transfers, breakfast, falcon show, certificate and photos vary between packages.
- Cancellation policy: check what happens if the weather cancels your flight.
- Reviews: look for comments about safety briefings, crew friendliness and how delays were handled.
We only work with established, licensed operators and we will always tell you clearly what your package includes.
How to get the best photos
A balloon flight gives you photo opportunities you will not find anywhere else. Some tips from our team:
- Film the inflation. The glowing burners and the balloon rising in the dark make dramatic footage.
- Shoot other balloons. On busy mornings, several balloons fly at once. They look spectacular against the sunrise.
- Use the shadow. As the sun rises, the shadow of your balloon stretches across the dunes. It is one of the most iconic shots.
- Look down, not only out. The patterns of the dunes, camel tracks and desert farms seen from above are beautiful.
- Switch to burst mode at sunrise to capture the changing colours.
- Keep your strap on and do not lean out of the basket for a better angle.
Balloon flight vs other desert experiences
If you are deciding how to spend your desert time, here is how a balloon flight compares to other options.
| Experience | Time of day | Adrenaline | Views | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hot air balloon | Sunrise | Low, peaceful | Best, from above | AED 1,099 |
| Evening safari | Afternoon–evening | Medium | Sunset from a dune | AED 120 |
| Overnight camp | Afternoon–next morning | Medium | Sunset, stars, sunrise | AED 350 |
| Dune buggy | Morning or late afternoon | High | Close to the dunes | AED 450 |
| Helicopter tour | Daytime | Medium | City and coast from above | AED 795 |
Many guests combine a balloon flight with an evening safari on a different day: the balloon for the peaceful sunrise view from above, and the safari for the adventure and the camp evening. You can compare all options on our desert safari page and read the complete desert safari guide.
Proposals, anniversaries and special occasions
A sunrise balloon flight is one of the most popular settings for marriage proposals in Dubai, and for good reason. Imagine asking the question as the sun rises over the desert, with no city noise and a view that stretches for kilometres. With a private balloon or a small shared basket, the moment is yours.
If you are planning a proposal, birthday or anniversary, let us know when you book. Depending on the operator, we can arrange a private basket, a “Will you marry me?” banner, flowers, a cake at breakfast and a photographer to capture the moment. These extras need to be organised a few days in advance.
A balloon flight with children
Families often ask whether a balloon flight is a good idea with kids. For older children who can stand comfortably in the basket and see over the edge, it can be an unforgettable experience. They usually love the inflation, the burners and spotting camels from above. Younger children may find the very early start and the waiting time before take-off difficult, and minimum age and height rules mean the youngest cannot fly at all.
If you are travelling with a mix of ages, one option is for some of the family to fly while the others meet you later in the day. Another is to choose a family-friendly evening activity instead, such as the Evening Desert Safari, where children of all ages are welcome. Our guide to things to do in Dubai with family has more ideas.
Planning the rest of your day
Because you are back at your hotel by mid-morning, the rest of the day is yours. After such an early start, most guests prefer something relaxed:
- A slow afternoon at your hotel pool or the beach.
- A gentle visit to the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo or the Dubai Frame.
- An evening Dubai Creek dhow cruise for a calm dinner on the water.
Avoid booking an evening desert safari on the same day as a balloon flight. It makes for a very long day and you will enjoy both more on separate days.
