Four days is a great amount of time for a first visit to Dubai. It is long enough to see the city’s most famous sights, spend an evening in the desert, enjoy the beach and still have time to rest, but short enough that you need a plan. Without one, it is easy to spend hours in taxis criss-crossing the city or to miss something you would have loved.
This Dubai itinerary for 4 days is the plan our team recommends to first-time visitors. It groups sights by area to save travel time, balances busy days with relaxed ones, and fits around Dubai’s climate. We include timings, approximate costs, alternatives for families, couples and summer visitors, and practical tips on getting around. You can follow it exactly or use it as a starting point and swap days around.
Tip: If you prefer everything arranged for you, our Dubai 4 Nights Holiday Package follows this itinerary closely, with hotel, airport transfers, a city tour, desert safari, Marina dhow dinner and Burj Khalifa tickets included.
Before you go
When to visit
October to April is the most comfortable time for sightseeing, with warm days and pleasant evenings. From May to September, temperatures are high, so plan outdoor activities for mornings and evenings and spend the middle of the day indoors. This itinerary includes summer alternatives for each day.
Visas
Many nationalities receive a visa on arrival, while others need to apply before travelling. Read our UAE tourist visa guide or apply for a UAE 30-Day Tourist Visa through us.
Where to stay
For a four-day trip, choose one base to avoid packing and unpacking. Downtown Dubai is best for sightseeing, Dubai Marina and JBR for the beach and nightlife, and Deira or Bur Dubai for budget-friendly hotels close to the old city. If you book our holiday package, we can suggest hotels in each area.
Getting around
Dubai has a clean, efficient metro, plenty of taxis and ride-hailing apps. For a stress-free trip, especially with family, a private car with driver or guided tours with hotel pickup save a lot of time. Read our guide to Dubai airport transfers and getting around.
Day 1: Arrival and Dubai Marina
Afternoon: arrive and settle in
Book a Dubai Airport Pickup so your driver is waiting at arrivals with your name on a sign. Check in to your hotel, freshen up, and pick up a UAE tourist SIM card if you have not arranged one already.
If you arrive early, spend the afternoon by the pool or on the beach. JBR Beach and Kite Beach are both free, with showers, lifeguards and cafés nearby.
Evening: Dubai Marina dhow cruise
Start your trip with a relaxed evening on the water. The Dubai Marina Dhow Cruise Dinner sails past the glittering Marina towers and JBR for about two hours, with a buffet dinner and a tanoura show. It is an easy first evening that does not require much energy after a flight.
Before boarding, take a stroll along the Marina Walk as the towers light up.
| Day 1 | Activity | Approximate cost per adult |
|---|---|---|
| Afternoon | Airport pickup, check-in, beach | Transfer from AED 120 per car |
| Evening | Marina dhow cruise dinner | From AED 129 |
Day 2: Old Dubai and Downtown
Morning: half-day Dubai city tour
Today you see both sides of Dubai. Start with the Dubai City Tour (Half Day), which covers:
- Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, with narrow lanes, wind-tower houses and small museums.
- An abra ride across Dubai Creek, on a traditional wooden water taxi.
- The spice and gold souks in Deira.
- Photo stops at Jumeirah Mosque, Burj Al Arab and Atlantis, The Palm.
The tour returns to your hotel at around 1:00 PM.
What you will see in old Dubai
Old Dubai is where the city began, and it is full of character. In the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, restored coral-stone and gypsum houses line narrow lanes. Look up to see the wind towers, an early form of natural air-conditioning that caught breezes and channelled them down into the rooms below. Small museums, art galleries and cafés occupy many of the houses. The Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest building in Dubai, is nearby.
The abra ride across the Creek is short but memorable. Traditional wooden boats carry passengers between Bur Dubai and Deira, as they have for generations, and the views of the busy waterway, cargo dhows and souks are wonderful.
In Deira, the spice souk is full of sacks of saffron, cardamom, cinnamon, dried lemons, frankincense and colourful dried flowers. The gold souk next door has hundreds of shops with window displays of gold jewellery. Bargaining is expected in the souks, so start lower than the first price and stay friendly.
Afternoon: rest
Have lunch and rest at your hotel during the hottest part of the day. This is especially important in summer, and it gives you energy for the evening at the Burj Khalifa.
Late afternoon and evening: Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall
Head to Dubai Mall in the late afternoon. Visit the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, then go up the Burj Khalifa At the Top for sunset. Book the sunset slot several days in advance, as it sells out quickly. Read our Burj Khalifa guide for tips.
After coming down, watch the free Dubai Fountain show on the lake outside the mall and have dinner in Downtown, with views of the tower lit up at night.
| Day 2 | Activity | Approximate cost per adult |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Half-day city tour | From AED 99 |
| Afternoon | Aquarium | From AED 149 |
| Sunset | Burj Khalifa At the Top (sunset) | From AED 239 |
| Evening | Dubai Fountain | Free |
Day 3: Desert safari
Morning: slow start or a city landmark
Keep the morning light. Have a late breakfast and relax at your hotel, or visit one landmark such as the Dubai Frame or the Museum of the Future. Eat a light lunch, as dune bashing on a full stomach is not fun.
Afternoon and evening: evening desert safari
At around 3:00 PM, your 4×4 collects you for the Evening Desert Safari with BBQ Dinner. You will enjoy dune bashing, a sunset stop on a high dune, a camel ride, sandboarding, henna painting, a barbecue dinner and live shows, before returning to your hotel at around 9:00 PM.
For a quieter evening, choose the Premium Desert Safari at a Private Camp. For more adventure, add quad biking or book a dune buggy. Our complete desert safari guide explains every option.
| Day 3 | Activity | Approximate cost per adult |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Museum of the Future or Dubai Frame | From AED 55 |
| Afternoon–evening | Evening desert safari | From AED 120 |

Day 4: Choose your own adventure
Your final day depends on what you enjoy most. Here are four options.
Option A: Abu Dhabi day trip
If you want to see the capital, join the Abu Dhabi City Tour from Dubai. Visit the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, take photos at Qasr Al Watan, explore Heritage Village and drive along the Corniche and past Yas Island. Read our Abu Dhabi day trip guide and our Grand Mosque visitor guide.
Option B: Palm Jumeirah and Aquaventure
Spend the day at Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark, then visit The View at The Palm in the late afternoon to see the island’s shape from above.
Option C: On the water
Charter a private yacht for a couple of hours to cruise past the Palm, Atlantis and Burj Al Arab, or join a shared yacht tour. Add a jet ski ride with Burj Al Arab views for some adrenaline.
Option D: Shopping and relaxing
Spend the morning at the beach and the afternoon shopping. Our Dubai Shopping Tour takes you to the gold and spice souks and an outlet mall, with a driver who waits while you shop. In the evening, visit Global Village if it is in season, from around October to May.
Departure
Book a Dubai Airport Drop-Off timed to your flight so you do not have to worry about getting to the airport.

Children’s prices are lower for most activities. Booking a package usually works out cheaper than booking each activity separately, and it includes the hotel and transfers.
Adapting the itinerary
For families with young children
Keep mornings for activities and afternoons for rest. Swap the Abu Dhabi day for a day at LEGOLAND Dubai or Atlantis Aquaventure, and choose a private 4×4 for the safari so the driver can keep dune bashing gentle. Our guide to things to do in Dubai with family has more ideas.
For couples
Swap the standard safari for an overnight desert camp or a sunrise hot air balloon ride, and spend your last evening on a private yacht at sunset.
For summer visitors
Move outdoor sightseeing to early mornings, choose a morning desert safari instead of the evening one if you prefer, and fill afternoons with indoor attractions such as Ski Dubai and IMG Worlds of Adventure. See our guide to things to do in Dubai in summer.
For adventure seekers
Add a dune buggy session, flyboarding, the XLine zipline or a tandem skydive over the Palm.
For culture lovers
Spend more time in old Dubai, add the Sharjah City Tour and choose the Abu Dhabi Cultural Heritage Tour for your fourth day.
If you have more than 4 days
With five days or more, add a day trip outside the city:
- Hatta Mountain and Dam Tour: mountains, kayaking and heritage. See our Hatta day trip guide.
- Ras Al Khaimah and Jebel Jais: the UAE’s highest mountain. See our Ras Al Khaimah guide.
- Fujairah East Coast Day Trip: beaches and the oldest mosque in the UAE.
- 6 Emirates in a Day Tour: a taste of six emirates in one long day.
Where to eat on each day
Food is a big part of any trip to Dubai, and the city has restaurants for every taste and budget. These suggestions fit each day of the itinerary.
Day 1: Dubai Marina and JBR
Dinner is included on the dhow cruise, but if you arrive early, the Marina Walk and The Walk at JBR are lined with cafés and casual restaurants serving everything from burgers and pizza to Lebanese grills and sushi. Many have outdoor terraces facing the water or the beach, which are lovely in the cooler months.
Day 2: Old Dubai and Downtown
In old Dubai, try a traditional Emirati breakfast or lunch near Al Fahidi, with dishes such as balaleet (sweet vermicelli with egg), chebab (Emirati pancakes with date syrup) and machboos (spiced rice with meat). Around the souks, small Indian, Pakistani and Iranian restaurants serve excellent, affordable food. In Downtown, the restaurants around the Dubai Fountain and Souk Al Bahar have terraces with views of the Burj Khalifa, perfect for dinner after your visit.
Day 3: Desert safari
Dinner is a barbecue buffet at the desert camp, with grilled meats, salads, rice, Arabic mezze and desserts. Have a light lunch before the safari.
Day 4: Abu Dhabi, the Palm or the water
On the Abu Dhabi tour, there is a lunch stop at a local restaurant, with a buffet add-on available. On the Palm, Atlantis and the Pointe have many restaurants with views back to the Atlantis hotel. For your farewell dinner, choose somewhere special with a view of the skyline or the sea.
Using the Dubai Metro
The Dubai Metro is clean, safe, air-conditioned and affordable, and it connects many of the places in this itinerary.
- Red Line: runs along Sheikh Zayed Road, stopping at the airport (Terminals 1 and 3), Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Marina.
- Green Line: serves old Dubai, including stations near the Al Fahidi area and the Deira souks.
- Nol card: buy a rechargeable Nol card at any station to pay for the metro, buses and trams.
- Gold Class: a premium carriage at the front of each train for a higher fare.
- Women and children’s section: a dedicated carriage area for women and children.
Remember that eating and drinking are not allowed on the metro, and fines apply. The metro is excellent for city sights, but for the desert, Abu Dhabi and the airport with luggage, a pickup or private transfer is much easier.
Money, payments and tipping
The currency is the UAE dirham (AED). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including taxis, malls and most restaurants. Carry a little cash for the souks, abra rides, small cafés and tips.
Tipping is not compulsory, but it is appreciated. In restaurants, check whether a service charge has already been added; if not, around 10 percent is normal for good service. For drivers and guides, a small tip at the end of a tour is a kind gesture if you enjoyed it.
What to pack
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Light, breathable clothing | Comfortable in the heat |
| A light jacket or cardigan | Malls, cinemas and the metro are very cold; desert evenings are cool in winter |
| Modest outfits | For the souks, mosques and the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi |
| Scarf | Useful for mosque visits and sun protection |
| Comfortable walking shoes | Malls and old Dubai involve a lot of walking |
| Swimwear | For the beach, pool and water parks |
| Sunglasses, hat, high-factor sunscreen | Essential all year |
| Power bank | You will use your phone for maps, tickets and photos |
Free things to do
Dubai has a reputation as an expensive city, but some of its best experiences are free:
- The Dubai Fountain shows outside Dubai Mall.
- Public beaches such as JBR, Kite Beach and La Mer.
- Walking around Al Fahidi and the souks.
- The Marina Walk and The Walk at JBR in the evening.
- Window-shopping in Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates.
- Watching the boats on Dubai Creek at sunset.
An abra ride across the Creek costs only a couple of dirhams and is one of the best-value experiences in the city.
Visiting during Ramadan
If your trip falls during Ramadan, you can still follow this itinerary with a few adjustments. Eating, drinking and smoking in public during daylight hours are not allowed, so plan to eat in your hotel or in screened restaurant areas during the day. Many attractions open later or have shorter hours. In the evenings, the city comes alive after sunset, with Iftar buffets, Ramadan tents and a festive atmosphere. Desert safaris and dhow cruises still run, sometimes with adjusted entertainment.
Practical tips for first-time visitors
- Book popular activities in advance, especially Burj Khalifa at sunset and safaris in winter.
- Group sights by area to save time in traffic.
- Dress modestly in malls, souks and religious sites. Swimwear is for the beach and pool.
- Drink plenty of water, even in winter.
- Carry some cash for the souks and abra rides, though cards are accepted almost everywhere.
- Respect local customs, especially during Ramadan.
- Leave time to rest. Four days in Dubai can be tiring if you try to do everything.
- Keep your passport copy handy. Some attractions, SIM cards and hotels ask for ID, so a photo on your phone saves time.

What should I not miss in Dubai on a first visit?
The Burj Khalifa, old Dubai and the souks, an evening desert safari, a dhow cruise and the Dubai Fountain.

Is it better to stay in Downtown or Dubai Marina?
Downtown is best for sightseeing near the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. Dubai Marina and JBR are best for the beach and evenings out.

Start with something relaxed on arrival day, see old Dubai and Downtown on day two, do the desert safari on day three and keep day four flexible.
